Ponzi Vineyards Tavola Pinot Noir 2017
|Region||United States, Oregon, Willamette Valley|
Deep red. Ripe, mineral-tinged red berry and cherry scents, along with a hint of succulent herbs and building spiciness. Smooth and open-knit, showing very good depth to the bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors, which take on a smoky quality with aeration. Shows the forward character of the vintage and finishes long and supple, with repeating spiciness and gentle, even tannins. (20% new French oak)
Following a bit of a difficult vintage, the latest vintage of Ponzi's popular Tavola bottling seems a bit stiff and chewy. The wild berry fruit is somewhat hidden in flavors of bark and herb, and it takes a fair amount of aeration to open up the aromatics, revealing light hints of cedar, cinnamon and baking spices. Decanting is recommended.
Medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Tavola has broody aromas of woodsmoke, underbrush, dried herbs and tobacco leaf over a core of ripe red and black berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, concentrated and earthy with a soft, grainy frame and good freshness, finishing on a baking spice note. This was aged 11 months in 20% new French oak.
